Career shifting – it’s surprisingly different to getting a new job!

By laurajanewrites on 27 April 2009 at 19:10

I would like to reinforce what Sab has found.  Career shifting for me is a long-term project.  I’ve reluctantly accepted that it’s not going to happen for me over night and I’ve finally put my burning ambition to write ahead of my naturally impatient nature.  When I first decided I wanted to do something different and pursue a new career, I approached it as I would approach finding a new job - with bags of enthusiasm and with the mis-guided expectation that success was months rather than years away. But changing careers is not always as simple as changing jobs.

Career Shifting = A long term process of discovery

By Sab on 21 April 2009 at 22:15

For some people, career changing and finding their vocation or 'place'
in the world can happen relatively quickly, maybe in less than a year.
But for others it can take years. And it's not through a lack of
courage or willpower. It's to do with clarity and exploration, learning
from hard experience, trial and error. I feel i'm going to be one of
those people. And the only way to get 'there' is to move forward, make
mistakes, learn from them and enjoy the ride. More

Tears, fears and frustrations – it’s a rollercoaster ride

By laurajanewrites on 30 January 2009 at 12:12

This whole career shifting malarkey is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.  The
excited elation of even the most minor steps forward, deeply contrast
with the frustrated impatience you feel when things aren't moving quite
as quickly and successfully as you want. Then the fear sets in - will I
ever emerge with my dream job at the end?  What will I do if it never happens for me?

I've got my first words in print - yey!

By laurajanewrites on 13 January 2009 at 21:54

As I shared in my first shiftlog, I've made the decision to take my
passion for writing and try to make a career out of it.  And I've had my first success.  OK, I admit it's a small success and I haven't actually made any money out of it.  But who cares, it was just the motivation I needed to confidently jump into my careershift.  More

Most things can be fixed with the writing of a list

By SpiderMint on 11 January 2009 at 08:44

While we’re being candid, I confess that I have Listmania.  On a daily
basis, this involves simply writing a to do list for the next day.  In
other aspects of my life, most personal crisis have been, if not
remedied, at least helped, with the writing of a list. More

A Christmas career shift epiphany

By Sab on 30 December 2008 at 14:18

I'm not suggesting everyone go try to catch an illness so they can take
time out to find their calling but maybe setting aside time, in an
empty room with no distractions, even for a couple of hours, til you
are bored out of your brain, could throw up some deep desires within
you. When you are kept from doing the things you love, the desire for
them becomes stronger. More
